BEAUTY OF BAROQUE

  OVERVIEW

In 17th century Baroque Rome, the Catholic church took complete artistic control. Skilled architects and painters became the new standard bearers of Catholic propaganda, and in doing so, engendered the classical traditions of Rome which have come to define the city in modern times.

Taking Carlo Maderno's lead, Giacomo della Porta, Pietro da Cortona, Gianlorenzo Bernini and Francesco Borromini created outstanding major works of art. All have become must-sees in Rome, due in no small part to the overflow of stylistic excess apparent in each.

We visit all of the squares, palaces, galleries and basilicas included on Bernini Master Sculptor. What makes this tour absolutely unique is the addition of Rome's Jesuit church of Sant'Ignazio (Andrea Pozzo, High Roman Baroque). The Sistine Chapel ceiling and St. Peter's dome are beautiful, but physical and real; the illusions inside Sant'Ignazio suggest elements of the metaphysical are at play in an unreal setting.

There are perhaps a dozen Baroque tours in Rome. Some are private (as ours), while others appear to be small group tours that run for two hours and do not enter any palaces or galleries, so we are duty bound to question their purpose. We know that a two hour tour is cutting it very fine, not even scratching the surface of such an important period in the history of our city.

A private Roman Baroque tour is obligatory to see what must be seen and understand what it all means.

We invite you to learn from our most accomplished Baroque historian guide on this, our all-encompassing full day tour of Baroque Rome that has long been respected in Italy travel communities.

  WHAT TO EXPECT

Rated 5 / 5 by Jeff A on March 29th, 2023  We booked two private Rome tours with Eternal and Diana was our guide for both. She is from Florence (where she graduated, then MA in Rome), and we listened intently to every word as she is a guide like no other. Genuinely passionate about how to inspire other people through the beauty of art, Diana made our time in Rome rather special. Thank you so much.
