MACABRE ROME † TOUR IN PEACE
- Macabre Rome † Tour in Peace™
by Eternal Tours Rome - "Self-Guided Rome Bone Church Tour & Three Underground Tours Beneath Rome with Expert Rome Tour Guides."
Setting off from Piazza Barberini and Bernini's iconic Fountain of the Triton, morbid curiosity soon prevails inside the spooky bone church concealed behind this busy Roman square. A bizarre place adorned with fragments of former lives, some of which date back to 1631.
Catch a frightful glimpse of "St. Francis in Meditation" by Caravaggio, the original master of dark art. Before parting company with the skeletal remains, you will come face to face with an inscription that reads "What you are now, we once were. What we are now, you will be". To live, is to die.
Along Via Nomentana, one of the most beautiful places in Rome is hidden in plain sight. You will find a mausoleum, a necropolis, and deep catacombs concealed beneath a partially buried basilica.
In conclusion, on the ancient Appian Way, make your descent down to cobwebbed crypts and the terrifying Tomb Tunnels! These dreary and forboding passages were once sanctuary for the devoted, who visited to honour their dead.
You will tour two of the deepest catacombs and discover unimaginably colourful frescoes depicting pagan images and early biblical influences, seemingly untouched by the ravages of time. One of these deep subterranean sites is known as "The Little Vatican".
Formerly "Best of Buried Rome", Tour in Peace is all the most disturbing parts of that tour plus the Tomb Tunnels. It tells a truly macabre tale about the meaning of death after life!

We visited many places. The catacombs outside Rome were the deepest (and coldest!), while in Rome we saw the Bone Church (amazing) and the most ancient and beautiful building we've ever seen (an ancient mausoleum).

So interesting! We went to four underground sites in different parts of Rome where there were almost no other tourists. Some tours were guided, while others were self-guided and that was perfect.
